You already know that routine eye exams are important in monitoring your eyesight and updating your prescription.
However, you might not know that evaluating your eye health is equally important. Many eye diseases and vision problems develop without obvious symptoms, making early diagnosis crucial.
At Palm Beach Eye Center, we focus on both optimal vision and excellent eye health. Led by Dr. George Khouri, our team delivers top-notch eye care using the latest technology.
In this blog, Dr. Khouri explains the comprehensive eye exam process and discusses some of the eye health issues he can detect through these exams.
The Comprehensive Eye Exam Process
During your exam, we review any symptoms you’re experiencing and evaluate your entire medical chart.
We generally start with an eye chart to evaluate your vision. If you need contact lenses or glasses, we test different lenses using a phoropter and perfect the prescription using a retinoscope.
Here at Palm Beach Eye Center, we focus heavily on eye disease screening and detection during exams. We use the most advanced testing equipment for accurate diagnoses on-site. Some of these include corneal topography, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus photography, fluorescein angiography, eye pressure testing, peripheral visual field testing and B-scan ultrasonography.
These painless, noninvasive tests offer highly detailed imaging of your inner eye. Dr. Khouri can detect serious eye and whole-body health problems in their earliest stages through this testing.
Eye Health Issues an Eye Exam Can Detect
Comprehensive eye exams can detect eye diseases, including:
- Glaucoma: Glaucoma occurs when eye pressure sharply increases and damages the optic nerve.
- Cataracts: When proteins inside the eye lenses begin breaking down and cluster together over time, it can cause lenses to turn milky white.
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): AMD occurs when the middle part of the retina, the macula, starts deteriorating.
- Diabetic retinopathy: High blood sugar over time leads to blood vessel damage. It often starts in the eyes, within the tiny retina blood vessels.
These eye diseases can have serious effects, ranging from blurry vision and blind spots to complete blindness. But the earlier they’re diagnosed, the better the chance of avoiding those outcomes.
While today’s blog focuses mainly on the eyes, it’s important to know that a comprehensive eye exam may also identify whole-body diseases.
As an ophthalmologist, Dr. Khouri is a medical doctor (MD) with extensive training in both eye- and body-wide health. He can identify early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, and blocked arteries during eye exams. You can start treatment now instead of waiting for a potentially life-threatening medical crisis.
